Course Purpose
The clinical placement course is intended to reinforce knowledge, skill, and attitudes of the learner in the performance of all basic nursing skills on various groups of clients/patients.
Course Learning Outcomes
CLO1: Demonstrate understanding of assessments and basic nursing procedures required for patients with medical and surgical conditions, including orthopaedic conditions, and for women during pregnancy, postpartum, and the newborn.
CLO2: Perform assessments and basic nursing procedures on patients with various conditions in different settings, including medical, surgical, orthopaedic, and maternal care and newborn care.
CLO3: Demonstrate precision and empathy in performing assessments and procedures to enhance patient care across different medical specialties.
CLO4: Apply skills in performing assessments and basic nursing procedures effectively in a clinical setting, adapting to the specific needs of different patient groups including those with medical, surgical, orthopaedic conditions, and maternal and newborn care.
Course Content
Module 1: Clinical Orientation & Professional Practice:Degree-level clinical reasoning, GFHP and ISBAR communication, clinical ethics and professional standards, infection prevention, documentation, and patient safety;
Module 2: Evidence-Based Medical Nursing & Clinical Reasoning:Clinical assessment and pathophysiology, pharmacology and medication monitoring, patient deterioration and MEWS, evidence-based nursing care planning;
Module 3: Advanced Perioperative & Surgical Nursing Care:Pre-, intra- and post-operative care, wound management and ANTT, surgical diagnostics and interpretation, post-operative complications;
Module 4: Comprehensive Maternal, Child Health & Immunisation:Antenatal, postnatal and child health assessment, immunisation and KEPI guidelines, maternal and child health risks, health education and family planning;
Module 5: Specialised Orthopaedic Nursing & Rehabilitation:Neurovascular assessment and the 5 Ps, fracture and cast management, traction management, mobility and rehabilitation, complications of immobility;
Module 6: Clinical Integration, Competency & Professional Growth:Integrated clinical practice, clinical competence and professional development, clinical leadership and interprofessional collaboration, independent clinical reasoning and decision-making.
