Course Purpose

In alignment with Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET) principles, which emphasize mastery of clearly defined competencies, outcomes-focused learning, industry relevance, flexible progression, criterion-referenced assessment, and preparation for real-world application, this course equips learners with demonstrable ethical competencies and citizenship skills demanded by today's dynamic global marketplace. Learners will master the ability to identify, analyze, and resolve ethical challenges in professional settings while fostering responsible citizenship behaviors that enhance organizational integrity, stakeholder trust, sustainable practices, and societal contributions. Upon successful demonstration of mastery, participants will deliver measurable outcomes: ethical decision-making in high-stakes business scenarios, application of frameworks to promote corporate social responsibility (CSR), advocacy for inclusive and sustainable business models, and leadership in ethical cultures, directly addressing employer needs for adaptable, principled professionals who drive long-term value in competitive industries.

 

 

Course Learning Outcomes

  • CLO1: Understand foundational ethical concepts by describing key ethical theories (e.g., utilitarianism, deontology, virtue ethics), principles, and their relevance to business and societal contexts. 

  • CLO2: Apply ethical principles and decision-making models to practical business situations, including ethical challenges in marketing, finance, HR, and operations. 

  • CLO3: Analyze complex ethical dilemmas by breaking down stakeholder impacts, evaluating consequences, identifying biases, and comparing alternative courses of action in real-world cases. 

  • CLO4: Create ethical strategies and leadership approaches by critiquing existing practices, justifying responsible decisions, and designing frameworks for ethical leadership, corporate sustainability, and active civic engagement in global business environments.

 

Course Content

Module 1: Foundations of Ethics

Core ethical theories including utilitarianism, deontology, virtue ethics, and care ethics. Moral reasoning and decision-making models such as the PLUS framework. Distinction between ethics, law, and compliance in business contexts. Influence of personal values and biases on professional judgment. Ethical self-assessment tools and contemporary ethical issues in Kenya.


Module 2: Business Ethics in Practice

Ethical leadership and corporate governance structures. Marketing ethics including truthful advertising and digital targeting. Finance ethics such as insider trading and transparency. HR ethics covering diversity, inclusion, and workplace fairness. Supply chain ethics focusing on labor rights and fair trade.


Module 3: Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainability

Business role in society: stakeholder vs shareholder perspectives. ESG frameworks and sustainability reporting. Environmental ethics including climate action and circular economy. Social impact through community development and human rights. Measuring and communicating CSR performance.


Module 4: Professional Ethics and Codes of Conduct

Industry ethical standards (e.g., CFA, AMA, SHRM). Ethics in negotiations, contracts, and conflict resolution. Whistleblowing systems and protections. Professional integrity in client relationships. Building a personal ethical brand.


Module 5: Ethical Dilemmas in Technology and Digital Business

Data privacy, consent, and compliance (GDPR/CCPA). Cybersecurity ethics and responsible data use. AI ethics including bias, transparency, and accountability. Ethical impact of automation on jobs. Digital ethics in e-commerce and social media platforms.


Module 6: Global Citizenship and International Business Ethics

Cultural relativism vs universal ethics. Global corruption issues and legal frameworks (FCPA/UK Bribery Act). Ethical challenges in globalization and supply chains. Human rights in multinational operations. Ethical strategies for emerging markets.


Module 7: Civic Engagement and Social Justice

Active citizenship and policy participation. Business role in social justice and inclusion. Corporate philanthropy and volunteering. Addressing inequality through ethical practices. Measuring civic and stakeholder impact.


Module 8: Ethical Leadership Development

Traits of ethical leaders and organizational culture building. Leading by example and promoting accountability. Ethical decision-making under pressure. Personal leadership ethics portfolio development.
