Course Purpose
The course seeks to expose learners to knowledge skills and attitudes related to Construction Management, including:
- Principles of construction management;
- Construction Planning;
- Tendering Procedures; and
- Law of Contract.

Course Content
Principles of management practice: Management functions, structure of construction industry in Kenya;
Construction project planning: Stages of construction planning, Planning process, Activity scheduling, Resource scheduling and work scheduling. Bar charts. Network analysis; Critical Path Method (CPM), Program Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT);
Civil and Structural engineering contracts: Types and procedures of contracts, contract documents, conditions of contract, and instructions to tenderers;
Preparation of standard contract specifications: Materials, workmanship, methodology and supervision;
Tendering procedures: Surety and performance bonds. Cost control: Book keeping and financial statements. Stock control, Stocktaking, cost benefit analysis;
Material management: Quality control and management;
Organization of construction industry: Span of control, delegation of authority, ultimate responsibility. Organization structures, site organization services, stores, liability period site records, site meetings and engineer's records, Final accounts;
Contract laws: Formation of contract, terms of a contract, performance of contract, claims and arbitration, breach of contracts and remedies, capacity to contract, labour relations.
