Curriculum

Module 1: Contextual Understanding of the Helping Relationshipe

In this unit we will develop a contextual understanding of the challenges faced by children and youth. We describe the role of relationships in child and youth care work. We explain the different parts of the helping relationship and the skills you need to develop. We are encouraged to reflect on our own values and ethics and how they relate to the values that are important in working with children.

Module 2: Basic Counselling Skills

In this unit we strengthen our interpersonal skills to establish and maintain helping relationships. We look at the principles of communication and counselling and how they can be applied. We look at verbal and non-verbal communication skills and how they may be used to build good work relationships with families and communities. We focus especially on communicating with children and youth. We are encouraged to practice these skills and apply them in our working context.

Module 3: Case Management

In this unit we focus on participatory assessment of the person’s situation. We look at how to develop a holistic case management plan. We explore how to set goals and solve problems. We are encouraged to use a multi-disciplinary approach and make referrals for specialised assistance to children, youth and their families. We look at how to record case information and write case management reports in our work.

Module 4: Specialised Support

In this last unit we learn to apply basic child, youth and family counselling knowledge and skills to address specific situations affecting children, youth and families living in difficult times. We focus on strengthening parenting skills of families. We focus on managing behaviour and constructive discipline of children and youth. We develop our skills in working with groups of children and youth. We also look at bereavement support and how to identify and refer children and youth affected by depression and anxiety.
