About this course
The Strengthening Teacher Digital Competence course is a self-paced, self-instructed professional development programme designed to enhance teachers’ capacity to integrate digital technologies into teaching and learning in a responsible, ethical, and transformative manner. The course responds to the growing need for digitally competent educators who can effectively leverage technology, smart education systems, and ethical Artificial Intelligence (AI) to improve learner outcomes.
The course is delivered entirely through guided digital resources and learner-driven activities, with no direct facilitation by a lecturer. It emphasizes practical application, reflective practice, and alignment with internationally recognised digital competence standards for educators.
Curriculum
This module introduces the concept of teacher digital competence and highlights its importance in modern teaching and learning environments. As education increasingly integrates digital technologies, teachers are expected to develop the knowledge, skills, and professional practices needed to use technology effectively, ethically, and pedagogically. The module also explores how digital tools are transforming education, the role of Professional Digital Competence (PDC), and the importance of critical engagement with digital resources. In addition, learners will complete a self-assessment activity to evaluate their current level of digital competence and identify areas for professional growth.
In this module, you will explore the principles of smart education, including learner-centred design, digital connectivity, and data-informed teaching. You will also examine digital learning ecosystems, which combine learning management systems, collaboration tools, assessment platforms, and digital content repositories. The module emphasises the role of learning analytics and digital feedback in supporting personalised and adaptive learning. By analysing simple learner data scenarios, you will learn how to make instructional decisions based on evidence. Finally, you will apply these concepts by designing a technology-enhanced learning activity and a smart lesson plan that integrates appropriate educational technologies.
In this module, participants will develop the knowledge and practical skills necessary to navigate digital environments confidently. The module begins by exploring information and media literacy, where teachers learn how to locate reliable digital resources, evaluate the credibility of online information, and use digital content appropriately in teaching. The module then examines digital communication and collaboration, highlighting how teachers can use digital tools such as messaging platforms, collaborative documents, and online discussion tools to interact with students, colleagues, and professional communities. Participants will also explore digital content creation, learning how to design and develop educational materials using multimedia tools such as presentations, videos, and interactive resources that enhance learner engagement.
This module focuses on the responsible and creative integration of technology in teaching and learning. By the end of the module, you will be able to demonstrate responsible technology use, apply ethical principles in digital environments, respect intellectual property, and model appropriate digital communication. You will also be able to foster digital citizenship and inclusivity by designing learning environments that value diversity and promote equitable access. Further, you will be able to create innovative technology-enhanced learning activities and apply strategies for safeguarding learners in digital spaces. Through practical activities, discussions, and reflection, participants will develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence required to use technology responsibly, inclusively, and creatively in their teaching practice.p>
In this module, you will explore how AI is used to support teaching and learning. You will examine key ethical principles such as fairness, accountability, transparency, and protection of learner data. You will also learn about different AI-powered tools, including intelligent tutoring systems, automated feedback systems, and adaptive learning platforms. In addition, you will analyse the risks associated with AI and develop strategies for evaluating AI tools to ensure they are ethical, inclusive, and learner-centred.
This module introduces teachers to the principles and practices of digital assessment and feedback. Participants will explore different types of digital assessments, including quizzes, assignments, peer assessments, and project-based evaluations. The module will also examine strategies for providing effective digital feedback, including automated feedback, instructor feedback, and peer feedback systems. Finally, participants will explore issues related to academic integrity and fairness in digital assessment environments, including plagiarism prevention, ethical assessment practices, and the use of analytics to support assessment decisions.
