Course Purpose
To facilitate the acquisition of knowledge, skills and attitude on Advanced Macroeconomic Theory.
Course Learning Outcomes
CLO 1: Demonstrate expertise in advanced macroeconomic theory by deriving, solving, and interpreting foundational models of growth, business cycles, and policy.
CLO 2: Employ advanced macroeconomic models, including DSGE, HANK, and open economy frameworks, to analyse how shocks, frictions, and policy affect aggregate variables.
CLO 3: Critically appraise current macroeconomic research by comparing theoretical paradigms, identifying methodological advances, and evaluating policy implications.
CLO 4: Develop and propose an original research question supported by a formal macroeconomic model that advances theoretical or applied work in the field.
Course Content
Dynamic Optimization: Techniques such as Euler equations, Bellman operators, recursive methods; infinite horizon consumption-savings problems; computational methods including calibration and estimation using Dynare, MATLAB, and Python. Intertemporal Macroeconomics & General Equilibrium: Arrow-Debreu frameworks, representative agent models; overlapping generations (OLG) models and intergenerational transfers; dynamic welfare analysis and efficiency theorems. Economic Growth and Long-Run Dynamics: Ramsey-Cass-Koopmans growth model; endogenous growth theories including AK and R&D-driven models; structural transformation, convergence trends, and growth measurement. Real Business Cycle (RBC) Theory: Foundations focusing on technology shocks, labour supply, and productivity—all examined alongside critiques and model extensions, including indivisible labour and capacity utilization. New Keynesian DSGE Models: Analysis of nominal rigidities, Calvo pricing, monetary policy rules (Taylor rule), credibility, and expectation management contrasted with RBC predictions. Market Frictions: Credit market imperfections (Bernanke-Gertler-Gilchrist model), labour market search and matching (Mortensen-Pissarides), incomplete markets, and liquidity constraints. Heterogeneous-Agent Frameworks (HANK Models): Transition from representative agent models to heterogeneous-agent New Keynesian frameworks; wealth distribution, insurance gaps, inequality dynamics; numerical solution methods for these models. Fiscal and Monetary Policy in Advanced Macroeconomics: Concepts of Ricardian equivalence, debt sustainability, fiscal multipliers within DSGE and HANK contexts, and monetary-fiscal policy interactions, including the zero lower bound challenge. Open Economy Macroeconomics: Small open economy DSGE models, exchange rate mechanisms, capital flow volatility, sudden stops, and international policy spillovers, including currency crises. Emerging Frontiers: Macroeconomic implications of inequality and redistribution, environmental shocks and climate change issues, applications of machine learning and big data methods in forecasting, and the political economy of macroeconomic policymaking.
