Curriculum
The programme begins with an online orientation session to familiarize participants with the learning platform, course expectations, assessment requirements, and engagement guidelines before commencing Module 1
This module introduces participants to the foundations of conflict by exploring its meaning, causes, stages, responses, effects, and various conflict resolution approaches. Learners will examine common types of conflict within the Kenyan context and appreciate conflict as both a challenge and an opportunity for positive change.
Participants will explore the evolution of Alternative Dispute Resolution, the various ADR mechanisms, and how mediation fits within the broader justice system. The module also examines the constitutional and legal framework supporting ADR in Kenya.
This module introduces mediation as a structured dispute resolution process. Participants will learn the history, principles, and stages of mediation, distinguish between Court-Annexed and Private Mediation, and develop practical skills through virtual role-plays and self-mediation exercises.
Participants will strengthen their practical mediation competencies by learning effective mediator skills, professional qualities, and techniques for managing mediation dynamics such as culture, gender, age, and power. The module emphasizes experiential learning through practical mediation simulations conducted via live video conferencing.
The final module focuses on advanced mediation techniques, handling impasses, professional mediation practice, and mediation across different contexts. Participants will complete a comprehensive, video-recorded capstone mediation exercise that integrates the knowledge and skills acquired throughout the course.
Participants will be assessed through continuous assessment activities, practical mediation exercises, module quizzes, and a final assessment designed to evaluate both theoretical understanding and practical mediation competence.)
Participants who successfully complete the course requirements will be awarded a Professional Mediation Course Certificate of Completion, jointly issued by Scopetalk Consultancy Ltd and the Open University of Kenya (OUK).
