Course Purpose
The purpose of this course is to enable learners to acquire knowledge and develop skills and attitudes on the African worldview on religion, exploring the foundational beliefs, practices, and values that shape African spirituality and its expression in daily life.

Key Concepts: Spirituality, Religion, and Culture. Topics: Definitions and distinctions between spirituality, religion, and culture; the African understanding of the sacred and secular.
The Role of Oral Traditions in Shaping Beliefs. Topics: Myths, proverbs, folktales, songs, and riddles as vehicles of religious and moral instruction.
Historical Context of African Religions. Topics: Pre-colonial religious systems and their social, political, and economic roles.
Pre-colonial Religious Systems in Africa. Topics: The structure and function of indigenous religious institutions; priesthoods, shrines, and festivals.
The Influence of Colonization on African Religion. Topics: The disruption of traditional systems, suppression of indigenous practices, and the introduction of Christianity and Islam.
The Interaction Between Traditional Religions and Missionary Faiths. Topics: Resistance, accommodation, syncretism, and the emergence of independent African churches.
Core Beliefs and Practices in African Religions. Topics: Belief in God, divinities, ancestors, spirits, ritual sacrifice, prayer, healing, and initiation.
