The course aims to provide you with an in-depth understanding of the socio-political, cultural, and historical issues reflected in the literary works of East African authors. You will be able analyze texts using theoretical frameworks and engage in discourse that promotes critical thinking, creativity, and communication.

Subtopics: Historical development of East African literature, early oral traditions, and the transition to written literature:  Colonialism and Postcolonialism in East African Literature: Subtopics: Depictions of colonialism, anti-colonial struggles, and the postcolonial experience; Identity and Nationalism.  Subtopics: The search for identity, nationalism, and the role of literature in nation-building. Learning Objectives: Investigate how authors address issues of personal and collective identity. Assess the role of nationalism in East African literature: Gender and Feminism in East African Literature. Subtopics: Representation of women, gender roles, feminist critique. Politics and Power in East African Literature: Subtopics: Exploration of power structures, political corruption, and leadership. Religion, Spirituality, and Culture: Subtopics: Influence of religion, traditional spirituality, and cultural practices.Urbanization and Modernity in East African Literature: Subtopics: Urban life, modernity, and the challenges of globalization. War, Conflict, and Displacement: Subtopics: Themes of war, displacement, and refugee experiences. Environmentalism and Eco-criticism in East African Literature Subtopics: Ecological themes, conservation, and human-environment interaction. The Future of East African Literature.
