The purpose of this course is to provide learners with a foundational understanding of language as a complex system of communication. The course aims to equip learners with analytical skills to understand the role of language in society and its influence on culture, thought, and identity.

By the end of this course, the learner should be able to:

1. Discuss fundamental components of language, including its structure, functions, and variations, while appreciating the role of language in shaping thought and society.
2. Apply linguistic concepts to analyse and describe the phonetic, syntactic, and semantic structures of language and how language operates in various sociocultural contexts.
3. Demonstrate the ability to engage in linguistic research by collecting, analysing, and presenting data related to language phenomena in real-life or digital contexts.
4. Develop a positive attitude towards linguistic diversity and exhibit respect for different dialects, languages, and language use, fostering cultural sensitivity and inclusivity.

Morphology: Subtopics: Morphemes, word formation processes, inflection, derivation. 

Syntax: Subtopics: Phrase structure, sentence types, grammatical relations, syntactic trees. 

Semantics; Subtopics: Lexical semantics, sentence semantics, ambiguity, and pragmatics. 

Pragmatics: Subtopics: Speech acts, implicature, politeness theory, context in communication. 

Sociolinguistics: Subtopics: Language variation, dialects, registers, language and identity, language policy: 

Psycholinguistics: Subtopics: First language acquisition, second language learning, language processing;
