Course Purpose

The purpose of this course is to introduce learners to the principles and methods of Tafseer (Qur’anic exegesis) through an in-depth study of Surah Al-Baqarah. The course aims to help students understand the historical context, structure, themes, and key teachings of the surah while exploring classical interpretations by renowned scholars such as Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari. Through analysis of selected verses, learners will examine the legal, ethical, and spiritual guidance contained in the surah and consider its relevance to contemporary issues. The course also encourages critical reflection, discussion, and application of the surah’s teachings to personal life, community responsibilities, and interfaith engagement, thereby fostering a deeper understanding of Islamic scholarship and the role of the Qur’an in shaping individual and societal values.

Introduction to Tafseer. Definition and significance of Tafseer. Different types of Tafseer (literal, contextual, thematic). Historical development of Tafseer. Historical Context of Surah Al-Baqarah. The circumstances of revelation (Asbab Al-Nuzul). Socio-political landscape during the time of revelation. The role of Madinah in shaping the surah. Structure and Themes of Surah Al-Baqarah. Overview of the structure (sections and verses). Key themes (faith, guidance, legislation, and social justice). Interconnection with other Surahs. Analysis of Selected Verses (Ayat). Detailed study of selected key verses. Interpretations by renowned scholars (e.g., Ibn Kathir, Al-Tabari). Contemporary relevance of these verses. Legal and Ethical Teachings. Examination of legal injunctions in Surah Al-Baqarah. The role of ethics and morality in Islamic law. Case studies illustrating these teachings. Spiritual Lessons from Surah Al-Baqarah.
