Course Purpose

The course aims to equip you knowledge on how English speech sounds are produced, classified, transcribed, and analyzed through both phonetic and phonological frameworks. The course covers key areas such as the anatomy of speech, the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), sound patterns, stress, intonation, and common phonological processes. It also emphasizes practical applications in language teaching, helping  you develop skills essential for pronunciation instruction and linguistic analysis,

 

 

Course Learning Outcomes

CLO1: Transcribe English speech sounds using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) and analyse phonological patterns in various dialects of English.

CLO2: Describe the basic principles of English phonetics and phonology, including sound production, transcription, and phonological analysis.

CLO3: Apply their knowledge of phonetics and phonology to real-world contexts such as teaching pronunciation and addressing common speech production issues in ESL/EFL learners.

CLO4: Evaluate the diversity of English sounds across dialects and a commitment to improving their own and others' pronunciation skills through informed and practical approaches.

 

Course Content

  • Introduction to Phonetics: Subtopics: Definition and scope of phonetics. Branches of phonetics: articulatory, acoustic, and auditory. The role of phonetics in linguistics and language teaching;
  • The Anatomy of Speech Production: Subtopics: The vocal tract and its components, Articulatory organs: lips, tongue, palate, etc. Classification of speech sounds based on articulation;
  • Consonant Sounds in English. Subtopics: Voicing, place of articulation, and manner of articulation. The International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) for consonants, Distinction between voiced and voiceless consonants;
  • Vowel Sounds in English. Subtopics: Monophthongs, diphthongs, and triphthongs The IPA for vowel sounds. Vowel length and quality;
  • Phonetic Transcription: Subtopics: Introduction to phonetic transcription conventions. IPA transcription of words and sentences, Differences between broad and narrow transcription; 
  • Phonology: Sound Patterns in English. Subtopics: Definition and scope of phonology, Phonemes, allophones, and minimal pairs. Distinguishing phonetics from phonology;
  • Syllable Structure and Stress Patterns. Subtopics: Definition of syllables and syllable structure, Word stress and its impact on meaning. Sentence stress and rhythm in English:
  • Intonation and Prosody in English. Subtopics: Definition and importance of intonation. Rising, falling, and mixed intonation patterns, The role of prosody in communication:
  • Phonological Processes in English. Subtopics: Assimilation, elision, and linking Reduction and weak forms in connected speech. Phonological rules and variations in English accents;
  • Application of Phonetics and Phonology in Teaching; Subtopics: Importance of phonetics and phonology in language teaching. Teaching pronunciation and listening skills. Addressing common pronunciation difficulties in ESL/EFL learners.
