Course Overview

Strengthening School Leadership for Teaching Excellence, Inclusion, and Resilient Learning equips school leaders with practical strategies to improve teaching quality, learner outcomes, inclusion, and school resilience across diverse African contexts. The course develops competencies in instructional leadership, teacher coaching, gender-responsive and inclusive practices, data-informed decision-making, shared leadership, community engagement, and education in emergencies. Through concise, action-oriented modules, participants will strengthen their capacity to support teachers, promote learner well-being, foster collaborative school improvement, and lead confidently during disruptions, ensuring equitable, safe, and continuous learning for all learners.

Expected Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the key principles and practices of effective school leadership that promote teaching excellence, inclusion, learner well-being, and education in emergencies.
  2. Examine how instructional leadership, teacher professional learning, inclusive practices, data use, and community partnerships contribute to sustainable school improvement.
  3. Apply practical leadership strategies to coach teachers, promote gender-responsive and inclusive learning, use school data, and manage learning continuity during emergencies.
  4. Reflect on various personal leadership practices evidence-informed approaches to strengthen resilient, inclusive, and high-performing schools in diverse educational.

Curriculum

Module 1: School Leadership for Improved Teaching, Learning, Inclusion and Well-being

Meaning of school leadership, the effective school leadership model, the changing role of school leaders, instructional leadership, and building a positive school culture.

Module 2: Supporting Teachers through Feedback, Coaching and Professional Learning

Instructional supervision, classroom observation, constructive feedback, coaching and mentoring, Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), and teacher motivation.

Module 3: Gender-Responsive and Inclusive School Leadership

Gender-responsive leadership, inclusive education, equity and diversity, learner safeguarding, positive school climate, and removing barriers to participation.

Module 4: Using School Data for Continuous Improvement

The importance and types of school data (academic, demographic, attendance, behavioural, perception, and financial/resource data), school self-evaluation, and developing evidence-based school improvement plans.

Module 5: Shared Leadership and Community Engagement

Shared leadership, stakeholder engagement, parent partnerships, school-community collaboration, effective communication strategies, and conflict management.

Module 6: Leading Schools During Emergencies and Disruptions

Education in emergencies, school preparedness, learning continuity planning, mobile and remote learning approaches, learner psychosocial support, and building resilient school systems.
