Course Purpose

The purpose of this course is to enable the learner to acquire knowledge, skills and attitudes in instructional leadership and management of education institutions.

Course Content

  • Introduction: Instructional leadership, administration; management, social organizations; school.
  • Theories: Classical/Traditional theories; scientific management theory; bureaucratic approach; human relations approach; behavioral approach; systems approach.
  • Administrative processes: administrative process; planning, organizing, staffing, directing, coordinating, reporting, budgeting.
  • Decision-making, problem solving, communication.
  • Structure of organizations; types, delegation and control.
  • Motivation: definition; meaning; process; theories.
  • Leadership: definition; concepts of power and authority; theories of leadership, functions; skills; styles; legal provisions in education: education act; TSC act; legal notices; government session papers (government circulars; management of school personnel: appointment, and assignment; training and development; discipline; performance and appraisal.
  • Management of students: admission; school rules and regulations; welfare; discipline.
  • Secondary school administration: objectives of secondary school education; types of secondary schools; role of BOM/PTA; roles of principals, deputy principals, head of department, teachers, school secretaries.
  • Management of school finances: sources of funds; budgeting accounting and auditing.
  • Change and management of change.
