Course Purpose

Welcome to the course on Fundamentals of Human Resource Management. This course provides an introduction to the key principles, functions, and practices of Human Resource Management (HRM) within organizational and business contexts. It explores essential HR activities including workforce planning, recruitment and selection, training and development, performance management, compensation and benefits, and employee relations. You will also examine the legal and ethical framework governing employment relations in Kenya, and understand how HRM contributes to organizational efficiency, employee engagement, and sustainable business growth. Through practical examples and case studies, you will develop the knowledge and skills required to apply HRM concepts in both private and public sector organizations, positioning you to make strategic and evidence-based HR decisions that support overall business success.

  2. Analyze common HR challenges faced by organizations in various sectors and propose practical, evidence-based solutions that promote efficiency and competitiveness.

  3. Apply appropriate recruitment, selection, and retention strategies that align with organizational goals and labor market realities in the Kenyan commercial environment.

  4. Develop HR policies and practices that comply with legal, ethical, and professional standards governing employment relations and workforce management in Kenya.

Introduction to Human Resource Management (HRM): Definition, scope, and objectives of HRM, Evolution and historical development of HRM, The role of HRM in enhancing organizational performance, The importance of HRM in achieving business success within commercial enterprises. 

Human Resource Planning in Organizations: Meaning, purpose, and importance of human resource planning, HR forecasting methods and techniques for different business environments, Succession planning and talent management in corporate settings, Linking HR planning with organizational strategy and business goals. 

Job Analysis and Design: The purpose and process of job analysis, Components of job description and job specification, Methods of job design (e.g., job rotation, enlargement, enrichment, and simplification),Aligning job design with organizational efficiency and employee satisfaction. 

Recruitment and Selection: Recruitment strategies and sources of manpower for organizations, Selection tools and techniques for identifying the right talent, Employer branding and its role in attracting qualified candidates, Legal and ethical considerations in recruitment and selection within the Kenyan context.

 Employee Training and Development: Identifying and assessing employee training needs, Designing, implementing, and evaluating training programs, Approaches to employee development and career progression, Measuring the effectiveness and return on investment of training initiatives. 

Performance Management: Objectives and significance of performance management systems, Performance appraisal methods and techniques, setting performance goals and key performance indicators (KPIs), Providing feedback, coaching, and addressing poor performance.

Legal and Ethical Issues in HRM (Kenyan Perspective): Overview of Kenyan labor laws and employment regulations, Ethical issues in recruitment, compensation, promotion, and termination, HRM compliance, audits, and disciplinary procedures, Ensuring health, safety, and welfare at the workplace. 

Current Trends and Future Directions in HRM: Emerging HR technologies (e.g., HR Information Systems, Artificial Intelligence), Remote work, hybrid models, and flexible HR practices, Green HRM and sustainable people management, Global HRM practices and their implications for Kenyan organizations.
